Smoke was visible from Smiths Falls as the fire department battled a large commercial fire that had been raging for several hours outside the town on Sunday morning.
The fire began at about 5 a.m. in a flea market located on Highway 43, when the Ontario Provincial Police sent out a tweet warning of road closures as a result.
The business involved has not been identified, but the West 43 Flea Market is located at 3768 Hwy 43, near Casselville Lane.
The building was still engulfed in flames and smoke just before 8 a.m.
The highway remained closed in both directions from the town, but was expanded to run from Cornelia Street through to Glenview Side Road. Detours are in place for motorists, OPP said Sunday morning.
