Ottawa police tabled their draft budget for 2017 just hours after the force laid yet another a murder charge in a year that has seen a record number of shootings and homicides across the city.

The police service proposed a budget that would increase by $8.9 million over next year, adding $11 to the average homeowner’s tax bill.

The draft budget also keeps in line with Mayor Jim Watson’s annual two per cent tax increase as in previous years.

Director General Debra Frazer told the police board Monday afternoon the city’s population is growing at a faster rate than the police resources available – a trend seen in other large cities across Canada.

The vast majority ($7.1 million) of next year’s budget increase is going to simply maintain existing services. Another $1.5 million has been earmarked for policing the multitude of events for Canada’s 150th birthday.

The police service is facing continuous pressure as the number of homicides (17) surpassed a 10-year high on the weekend.

While there is no plan to increase the overtime budget, which has ballooned to more than $2.5 million this year, Frazer said a new deployment model to be introduced in the New Year will offset overtime pressures among the rank and file.

Board chairman Eli El-Chantiry said all city councillors are invited to a finance and audit committee meeting on Nov. 17 to discuss the budget before it is tabled by city council the following week.

More to come.
