Here are some key times to look for tonight:
- 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT: Some of the first polls close, including those in Georgia and Virginia. If Virginia goes Trump or Georgia goes Clinton (both unlikely), it will be a bellwether for the direction of the night. Most of the polls in Florida will also close at this time.
- 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT: Polls close in North Carolina and Ohio. Both of these swing states are highly contested, with the traditionally red North Carolina leaning Clinton and the traditionally purple Ohio leaning Trump.
- 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT: More than a dozen state polls close, with the rest of Florida and Pennsylvania the most important. If Trump loses either Florida or Pennsylvania his night is basically over. If he wins both, we’re in for a long evening. Almost half of Florida voted early, so we should have results fairly quickly there. Pennsylvania has no early voting, so results will likely be slower.
- 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT: Another flood of states come in, including Wisconsin and Arizona.
- 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT: Nevada and Iowa are the key states in this batch. Nevada’s polls show the candidates neck and neck, but indicators from early voting imply Clinton has an advantage. Iowa is traditionally a swing state, but seems to be leaning fairly red this election.
- 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT: Polls close in California. Although the election will likely be called by this point, there are many interesting ballot measures happening in California.
