A team from Montreal has won the competition for a new monument at Sparks and Elgin Streets marking Lord Stanley of Preston’s donation of the Stanley Cup in 1892.

The winning design from the Covit/Nguyen/NOOR team was inspired by the simple silver bowl donated by Lord Stanley to recognize the “champion hockey team in the Dominion.”

The monument is an elegant 3.45-metre-high chalice made from silvered aluminum bands that visitors can peer through to get framed views of the National War Memorial.

It will sit on a white paved “hockey rink” with embedded stainless steel lines evoking skate marks and 39 granite discs engraved with the names of Stanley Cup winners from 1893 to 2017. A black granite bench in the form of a hockey puck completes the monument.

The design was chosen from eight finalists. It will be donated to the City of Ottawa and will be unveiled in December 2017 as part of celebrations marking Canada’s 150th anniversary, the 100th anniversary of the NHL and the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Senators.

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for March 18, 2017 – the 125th anniversary of Lord Stanley’s gift.
