It was well before dawn Tuesday when Anna Maranta got out of bed, walked down the hall of her home in the Glebe, and thought: “What happened to my door?”

Red spray paint covered the door’s window, part of a hastily scrawled swastika and anti-Semitic insult left in the night. Maranta is a rabbi, and uses her apartment as the Glebe Minyan, a place where Jews gather to pray.

Maranta has had “a lot of verbal abuse” in the past, generally related to her work as a social activist, “but I’ve never had anything like this before.”

An attack like like can just pop up by itself without a specific, immediate cause, she believes. “And I also think we have a president-elect south of the border who has made it acceptable to be bigoted and racist.”

She posted a photo of the door on Facebook and wrote: “This. This is what has been unleashed by the American President Elect, and those that support him.”
Lower down, the door to her Glebe home carries a small sign that says “All are welcome.”

“This is the door to my home, but I’m a rabbi and I also it’s also where I hold my celebratory activities” such as prayer services, Maranta said.

There have been no recent threats or sources of conflict, she said.

“I’ve had nothing, so this is just completely out of the blue.”

There is only one way to respond, she says: “We need to talk and communicate and prepare meals and learn to overcome differences by finding commonalities.”

Maranta is a renter — she has one floor of the house — and has called the landlord. The physical damage is limited to spray paint on the door frame and window. The intruder came up on the porch, but didn’t enter the building.
