A 53-year-old Belleville man was rescued from a conservation area in Prince Edward County Tuesday after he fell from his bike and tumbled down a steep embankment into a ravine.

Cst. Kim Guthrie of the Prince Edward County OPP said the accident occurred at around noon on a trail in the McCauley Mountain Conservation Area, between Belleville and Picton, about 280 kilometres from Ottawa.

A hiker heard the cyclist’s cries for help and called 911.

The injured cyclist was in a remote area making it difficult to locate him, and once he was found the difficult terrain further aggravated rescue efforts by police, fire and EMS teams.

Several hours responders moved him 40 metres up the steep slope using ropes, rescue baskets and a winch.

The victim was transported to Picton hospital where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
