Mayor Jim Watson inducted 15 of Ottawa’s most outstanding residents into the Order of Ottawa during a ceremony this evening at Ottawa City Hall.
Those inducted by Mayor Watson into the Order of Ottawa are: Adrian Burns, Brian Coburn, Sister Louise Dunn, Clarence (Gus) Este, Abraham Feinstein, Harley Finkelstein, Dr. Nishith Goel, George Hanna, Tae Eun Lee, Gibson Patterson, Jacqueline Pelletier, Chris and Erin Phillips, Jim Robinson, David Smart and Mark Sutcliffe.
Mr. Bill Malhotra was selected as a 2015 Order of Ottawa recipient but was unable to attend the induction ceremony last year and was honoured at this evening’s ceremony.
Grandmaster Tae Eun Lee, one of the 15 recipients selected to receive the 2016 award, was unavailable to attend this evening and will be honoured next year during the 2017 Order of Ottawa ceremony.
“I am honoured to present the 2016 Order of Ottawa to these accomplished individuals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to our city,” said Mayor Watson. “Through their work in both professional and civic-oriented endeavors, they have made Ottawa a better place for all of us and inspired us to make a difference in the lives of others within our community.”
The Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching was presented this evening to Inspector John Medeiros, a police officer with the Ottawa Police Service. Inspector Medeiros was recognized for his work as a volunteer coach with the Ottawa Police Service Soccer Mentoring Program and for his active participation and supporter of the Aboriginal Working Committee.
A list of Order of Ottawa inductees for 2016 will be prominently displayed on a wall on the first floor of City Hall alongside the recipients from the previous four years.
This civic award recognizes exceptional citizen contributions in the many areas of city life, including arts and culture, business, community service, education, public service, labour, communications and media, science, medicine, sports and entertainment, or other fields of endeavour that benefit the residents of Ottawa.
Recipients of the Order of Ottawa were chosen by a Selection Committee comprised of the Mayor, City Clerk and Solicitor, Chief of Police, Chief of Protocol, City Archivist and the Chief Executive Officer, Library Services.
