Ottawa’s first winter wallop did not deter 24,000 CFL fans from packing the outdoor stadium at TD Place on Sunday for the Eastern Division Final between the Ottawa Redblacks and the Edmonton Eskimos.
After cheering for three hours as winds gusting from 50 to 70 km/h made temperatures feel like -12 or colder, Ottawa fans emerged with their whistles, cowbells, Vuvuzelas and other noisemakers in hands to celebrate the Redblacks’ 35-23 victory over the Eskimos.
With winter staring him in the face, Francesco Palozzi wore four layers of clothes, three hats and two-pairs of gloves to ride his bicycle to the game.
“It’s tropical,” he said half-joking adding that, this was just the start of winter.

Phil Cousineau, his 10-year-old son Liam, and their friend Sébastien Larocque donned their best Redblacks official team gear.
They celebrated with official team tuques and jerseys, and even a giant Redblacks flag.
“We’re huge fans,” Larocque said.

The MacFarlanes, like other Ottawa families, showed off their Canadiana stripes and red and black plaid as they emerged from the stadium with warm drinks in hand.
“Go Redblacks!” they cheered.

As the clock wound down, many fans began to head inside TD place for a reprieve from the cold and snow to watch the remaining minutes on giant television screens.
The heavy snow eventually turned to slush as fans emerged from the stadium after the Redblacks eastern division win.
Staff cleared the streets with shovel in hand as fans rushed to take advantage of free public transit and park-and-shuttle services following the game.
“We’ve gotta catch the bus,” Marcel and Diane said, but not before giving the home team the thumbs up.
