Children returned to classes Tuesday at École St-Paul in the Hull sector of Gatineau, nearly two weeks after teachers declared it was unsafe because of the presence of asbestos and walked out.

Pieces of the gym ceiling were falling down and they contained asbestos.

Now the Commission scolaire des portages-de-l’Outaouais says the ceiling has been repaired and air testing shows the asbestos is almost gone.

There remain traces in parts of the gym, the board says, though these are below the allowable level. Further cleaning is scheduled for these areas, and the gym will remain closed until that is completed.

School buses are running on the normal schedule again.

The teachers and children have been gathering each day in a community centre, but it wasn’t big enough to allow regular class activities.

The school is 50 years old.
