Ottawa is about to get more sweet choices: Stella Luna, Ottawa’s award-winning gelato shop, is expanding into Hintonburg.
Tammy Giuliani, the shop’s owner and master gelato maker, announced Tuesday the five-year-old shop would open its second outlet next spring at 1130 Wellington St., near the corner of Rosemount Avenue, in Hintonburg. She said the new shop will be unlike the original in Old Ottawa South.
“It will be completely different look for Stella Luna, with floor-to-ceiling windows, all light and bright.”
The shop, expected to open in April, will be at the west end of a new condo building called Tamarack Wellington, between the old Grace Hospital and Rosemount public library.
“It will have a side patio, adjacent to green space with a fountain and picnic benches,” said Giuliani. “That’s what we lack in Old Ottawa South.”
Giuliani, who won bronze at the Americas competition of a world gelato tour in Chicago last summer and who will go on to represent Canada at a world competition in Italy next September, says her new shop will also offer a broader menu.
“We’ll be open every evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a selection of fine wines, micro brews, tapas and charcuterie.” She said Hintonburg is the ideal home for their second shop since “it has an amazing culinary scope — it’s a neighbourhood area, with families, but it also has destination restaurants.”
It seems that Ottawa has a huge appetite for ice cream. Giuliani says that in a single weekend last summer, she and her staff made, scooped and sold 1.2 tonnes of gelato from the Old Ottawa South shop on Bank Street and two roaming carts.
“It might have been Father’s Day weekend, I’m not sure. Last summer was just a blur for us, we were so busy.”
Each day, the staff at Stella Luna hand-make 16 to 22 flavours of gelato, starting at 6 a.m., earlier in summer.
Over the last year, more than a half dozen new ice cream shops opened in Ottawa, including Mantovani on Murray Street, Sash on William Street, Moo Shu Ice Cream on Bank Street in Centretown, Chocolats Favoris in Orléans, Beachconers in Britannia and Boccato in the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne.
Giuliani, who trained to be a master gelato maker in Italy, said that Stella Luna’s success may have encouraged some of the other businesses to open.
“People may see the long line-ups and think it’s easy. They’re in for a shock. It’s a fine balance of premium ingredients, Old World techniques and a great team. There are no shortcuts. It’s up to Ottawa to decide.”
