The CFL has blown the whistle on a sweet deal that could have cheesed off a few football fans who have already shelled out top dollar to cheer on the RedBlacks at this weekend’s Grey Cup.
Sixteen Hamilton-area Pizza Pizza locations were offering 15 pairs of first-come, first-serve tickets to the Grey Cup at Toronto’s BMO Field for a paltry $30 in a package that also includes a three-topping large pie, 10 wings, four cans of pop and dipping sauce.
Grey Cup tickets alone on StubHub currently range from a reasonable $75 for nosebleeds to an average of $300 for mid-level seating, all the way up to $1,400 for premium seats.
And if the few hungry football fans who were lucky enough to swing through Steeltown Thursday thought the deal was too good to be true, it turns out they’re right.
By 5 p.m. Thursday, after Hamilton Pizza Pizza locations reported the tickets were already moving faster than a Greg Ellingson sprint down the sidelines, the CFL stepped in and put a stop to the promotion.
“Although it may have been made with good intentions, (the promotion) didn’t have proper authorization,” stated CFL spokesman Paulo Senra in an email. “Once it was brought to our attention, we had the promotion pulled immediately.”
Though the CFL did not provide specifics on the mix-up, fans who have already bought tickets could have felt slighted by the optics of the pizza chain essentially handing out an additional 480 tickets for free.
Ticketholders vented their anger on Twitter last week when the BMO Field host Toronto Argonauts slashed prices to “unsold sections” of the stadium for the championship game between the RedBlacks and the Calgary Stampeders, while also saying, “The tickets that you (already) purchased are not affected by these changes.”
Other ticketholders received a different message from the hosts, who assured them “We are listening” to concerns, while making a conciliatory offer: “… Since the price of tickets you purchased has now been lowered, we are offering you the opportunity to upgrade at no additional charge.”
One lucky Hamilton Pizza Pizza customer reported, via Twitter, that he walked out of a store 10 minutes before the promotion was kiboshed with his grub, plus two tickets in section 117, each with a face value of $299.
Pizza Pizza did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A Hamilton-area customer service operator said there was no way to tell how many tickets were given away, since the deal was restricted to walk-in customers only. The representative did say most tickets “went pretty quick” once the promotion was rolled out Thursday.
The CFL announced Wednesday fewer than 2,000 tickets remain for the game.
