Local MPP Randy Hillier was dodging questions Saturday after he retweeted a photo of NDP leader Andrea Horwath wearing a head covering while speaking to a Muslim cleric, commenting that it was “quite the image.”

The original tweet, by @Banks-Todd featured of a photo of Horwath speaking to an iman. She is shoeless and wearing an orange head covering.

“Meet Ontario NDP leader @AndreaHorwath bare foot and dehumanized with head gear, as she submits to the will of a Muslim male,” said the tweet from Bank, who describes himself as “Dark days. Moron in the Prime Minister’s office + criminal gang in charge of Ontario.”

Hillier, the Progressive Conservative MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox& Addington retweeted the post and added the comment: “That’s quite the image looks like she swallowed Cheri’s message hook line and sinker.”

Hillier’s tweet was later deleted.

Responding to questions from reporters via Twitter, Hillier replied that “retweets are neither recognition of support nor opposition. It is quite the image and wanted to share.”

Hillier later deleted the tweet.

He did not respond to requests for an interview.

It appears that “Cheri” in Hillier’s comment is a reference to MPP Cheri DiNovo, the NDP MP for the Toronto riding of Parkdale-High Park. At an anti-Trump protest in Toronto on Nov. 19, DiNivo made a speech in which she urged listeners to stand up for the victims of racism.

“We want our leaders to stand up for those who are Muslims. We are all Muslims now,” said DiNovo at the protest.

Meanwhile, the photo of Horwath dates back to September 23, when Horvath, who represents Hamilton Centre, visited Hamilton’s Ibrahim Jame Mosque in the wake of a fire set in a doorway of the mosque to meet with Imam Ayman Al-Taher and members of the congregation.

Police were calling the incident a hate crime and Al-Taher said worhsippers at the mosque were feeling fearful and anxious.

During the visit, Horwath said she would introduce a private member’s bill that would designate October as Islamic heritage month in Ontario to help to “send out the signal that Ontario is a place for everyone,” and “to raise awareness, to celebrate the positive contributions of the Muslim community in Ontario.”
