A visit to the mall before Christmas can be a stressful time for any family, but for those with autistic children the experience can be especially overwhelming.

Some parents got a reprieve this weekend thanks to Sensory Santa, a program organized by QuickStart Early Intervention for Autism, a volunteer organization whose mission is to help children with autism reach their full potential.

The program allows families to bring their autistic children to visit Santa for a photo during morning hours when the mall is at its quietest before the crowds rush in.

Alexander Sinclair, who is autistic, sat on Santa’s chair with his sister, Ruby, at the Rideau Centre in Ottawa on Sunday. He gave the experience “two thumbs up.”

This year, six Ottawa-area malls agreed to participate in the program which is now in its third year.

No registration is required. For dates, locations and times, please visit: www.quickstartautism.ca
