The city has suspended the food licence at a controversial Hintonburg lounge.

Kitchissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper confirmed that bylaw officers pulled the food premises licence for the Vibe Cafe and Lounge, pending a hearing on Dec. 16 to revoke it permanently.

Police were seen inside the Somerset Street establishment in the aftermath of a deadly shooting Tuesday night.

Leslie Mwakio, 17, was found shot in an SUV on Bayswater Avenue near Laurel Street, about a block away from the restaurant.

At a recent community safety meeting, residents expressed their “strong concern” that the Vibe Lounge is a problem, Leiper said Wednesday.

But lounge manager Sam Jahantab responded by saying that the shooting had nothing to do with his business or its customers, as it happened hundreds of metres away and after the restaurant had closed.

Leiper said the lounge will still be allowed to open their doors, but they cannot serve food until the completion of the tribunal.

The councillor confirmed the city department in charge of business licensing by-law has been working on the revocation for the past month.

“One of the conditions of operating a food premises (licence) is that you cannot have a negative impact on the neighbourhood, so they have determined that there has been a negative impact on the neighbourhood based on a couple of years’ worth of complaints.”
