Ottawa awoke to wildly blowing snow and a windchill of -23 Thursday.
The City of Ottawa is under a frostbite advisory and it’s only getting colder.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of a large system from the southwestern U.S. bringing snow and poor driving conditions Friday evening into Saturday.

A spark of warmth for commuters – Rideau Street, closed to traffic since October to catch up on LRT constructing following reopened to buses at 5 a.m. Thursday, saving OC Transpo and STO riders a longer trudge in the blustery conditions.

No major problems on the region’s roads, although by around 7:15 a.m. Thursday, city firefighters had safely extricated a person from a car that landed in the ditch at Leitrim and Bowesville roads.
Thursday is is forecast to be a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -9 C.
The overnight low is expected to dip to -25 C, which will feel like -33 with the windchill.
Friday’s high is forecast to be -12 C but feeling more like -30 before snow is expected to arrive Saturday.

In advice that should surprise no one, the city’s public health department suggests layering against the cold with a moisture-wicking base layer then insulation and finally something to keep you dry.
“Cover as much exposed skin as possible to prevent frostbite,” warns the health unit, which issues the advisories to people who care for the most vulnerable like young kids and the homeless when a windchill of -25 threatens.
