The radar trace tells the tale: a narrow — maybe 30 kilometres wide — band of snow in a line from the Bruce Peninsula on Lake Huron all the way across south-central Ontario and stretching as far as Rochester, New York.

When it began to cross the Greater Toronto Area, moving in from the north, the city Ottawa loves to mock appeared — if Twitter was any indication — moved into the snowpocalypse equivalent of DEFCON 2.

Almost instantly #snowTO was trending No. 1 because, well, Toronto, eh? In fairness, it was — briefly — fairly intense.

Out came the usual admonishments to “be careful out there” and “Drive safe (sic) everyone”.

Anyone taking the time to check Environment Canada’s weather radar station in nearby King City would have realized that the main squall would likely be short-lived. And yes, by 5 p.m., it was pretty much history, though more flurries were expected overnight in advance of a “Colorado low” that might — or might not — bring a dump of wet snow, or even rain — beginning Friday night.

But for those faced with navigating Toronto’s overcrowded roads, oh! the humanity.

There is almost NO movement on the DVP. Just stay at work tonight folks. #SnowTO

I can't see beyond 10 meters out of my work window so I guess I live here now. #SnowTO pic.twitter.com/aRHoJM4UWD

And, well, there’s this:

Snowing so hard in Toronto right now that I just tried to open the curtain to look out the window but the curtain was already open. #snowTO

In Ottawa, the Valley and the rest of Eastern Ontario, meanwhile, a weather alert Thursday afternoon warned of snow — courtesy that Colorado low — arriving Friday night and continuing through Saturday, with the possibility of freezing rain and ice pellets, then snow again on Sunday.

In other words, winter.
