A 25-year-old man is dead after his car collided almost head-on with an OC Transpo bus in Orléans Thursday night.

The driver of the bus wasn’t seriously hurt in the crash in a construction zone on Tenth Line Road at Southfield Way just after 11:30 p.m.

There were multiple 911 calls alerting first responders to the crash involving a Saturn Astra hatchback that had an “off-set head-on collision” with the bus. The impact was so powerful that the front of the car began to disintegrate, creating a long trail of debris, before it hit a metal construction trailer.

Paramedics started resuscitating the man even as firefighters extricated him from his car but he suffered what they describe as multi-system trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver, a 58-year-old woman, was at first trapped in the bus by extensive damage to its front end but did not have serious physical injuries. She was assessed by paramedics then left in the care of OC Transpo supervisors.

It’s unknown whether there were passengers on the bus.

Other motorists stood by until emergency crews arrived. Ottawa police are investigating.
