The prime suspect wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant in connection to a fatal Centretown shooting turned himself in to police Friday, and now faces a first-degree murder charge.

Steven Michael Frenette, 33, was considered armed and dangerous when police named him as the subject of a manhunt after Lee John Joseph Germain was gunned down Dec. 10 in Centretown.

Police were called to 571 McLeod St. after a neighbour reported hearing a gunshot, and they arrived to find 32-year-old Germain critically injured. Paramedics attempted to treat him, but he succumbed to his injuries in hospital, said Ottawa Insp. John Medeiros.

Police said there were others inside the three-storey brown brick Ottawa Community Housing building at the time of the shooting.

A witness said she heard what sounded like gunshots. When she looked outside, she said, she saw a woman with white hair jump into a car and attempt to drive away. A man ran outside and tried to get into the car, but she drove away, and the man fell, the woman said.

The witness called 911 and a man was taken out of the building on a stretcher.
