There are four major fireworks displays taking place in Ottawa on New Year’s Eve, and that’s only part of the festivities on the eve of Canada’s big year.
Wherever you spend your evening, have a plan to get home safely and be aware of downtown road closures. Your best bet is to take advantage of OC Transpo’s free bus service after 4:30 p.m.
Rick Chiarelli’s Alcohol-free Family New Year’s Eve
Sponsored by Algonquin College
Ben Franklin Place
Begins at 6 p.m.
Fireworks at 10 p.m.
Thousands of people from Nepean and beyond make the annual trek to Ben Franklin Place for this fun, family-friendly frolic to end the old year and ring in the new. Our theme is Comic Strips and Cartoon Bits.
Come skate and play games on the outdoor rink, enjoy sleigh rides and then warm up inside with refreshments and more family-friendly activities. Proceeds from the canteen go to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
This year’s fireworks display promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Ottawa 2017 Cauldron Lighting and
Fire of Friendship Torch Relay
Marion Dewar Plaza, Ottawa City Hall
Begins at 5:30 p.m.
Our big year starts right here so let’s kick it off with the first of many events to mark Canada’s 150th birthday.
Come see the new Ottawa 2017 Cauldron lit for the first time and then watch hundreds of local youths form a Fire of Friendship Torch Relay line linking the cauldron to the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill. You don’t want to miss this spectacle.
Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the Enbridge New Year’s Eve barbecue (free hot dogs while quantities last) and free coffee and hot chocolate offered by Tim Hortons. DJ Rise Ashen will provide the musical backdrop to the evening.
The official lighting ceremony begins at 6:15 p.m. and the Fire of Friendship Torch Relay departs City Hall at 6:45 p.m.
Canada 150 Kickoff
presented by Canadian Heritage
Parliament Hill
Begins at 7:45 p.m.
After the Fire of Friendship from City Hall re-ignites the Centennial Flame, stick around Parliament Hill to ring in 2017 in patriotic style.
There will be two fireworks displays. The first is scheduled for 8:17 p.m. (a.k.a 20:17. Get it?). The second will take place at midnight. In between, stay warm with the hot sounds of some outstanding Canadian recording artists:
Hogmanay 2016
Aberdeen Pavilion, Lansdowne
Event begins at 5 p.m.
Take in the traditional and contemporary sounds of live Scottish and Celtic music as well as Scottish highland and traditional dancing. We hope you like bagpipes!
There will be fireworks at midnight, featuring the Barra MacNeils, but if that’s too late for your little ones, there will be an early countdown at 7 p.m. (midnight in Scotland) ending with a balloon drop. Don’t forget to bring your skates.
Did we mention it’s free? You don’t want to miss this New Year’s Eve tradition.
