The wheelchair basketball season came to an end last week for 17 young athletes. It began 11 weeks earlier in the gymnasium of Meadowlands Public School thanks in part to a $10,000 grant to the City of Ottawa from the Canadian Tire Parasport Jumpstart Fund.

The Parasport Jumpstart Fund is a joint venture of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Canadian Tire Jumpstart that supports and promotes grassroots para-athlete development for children in financial need.

The $10,000 grant was earmarked to support the wheelchair basketball program which the City runs in partnership with the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre and Ottawa Carleton Wheelchair Sports Association.

The basketball program promotes reverse integration where wheelchair athletes compete with able-bodied athletes, in some cases allowing siblings to play the sport together on the same team.

Playing a sport is about more than just getting active: it fosters self-esteem and helps kids develop courage, confidence and teamwork. Sports equip kids for life.

Unfortunately, children with disabilities often miss out on the opportunity to grow these important life skills due to a lack of accessible programming. The Parasport Jumpstart Fund was set up to help close this gap.

Congratulations to all our wheelchair basketball players on the culmination of a great season. Until next time!
