Keep your dog on a leash when you’re near rivers or lakes this winter.

That’s the message from Ottawa firefighters after they rescued a dog that fell through the ice on the Rideau River in Nepean.

A 911 call came in late Tuesday afternoon that the dog fell through just off Winding Way road.

Firefighters warned the dog’s owners not to attempt a rescue on their own. The emergency responders then set up an inflatable boat used for ice rescues and managed to get access to the dog.

It’s not the first time this has happened.

“Ice/water rescue team rescues another dog that went through the ice on the Rideau River,” tweeted fire prevention and investigations officer Marc Messier shortly afterward.

“Keep your dogs on leash around water!!!”
