If you were planning to mark the new year with an icy plunge into the Ottawa River, you will have to get your chill on elsewhere.
Organizers of The Sears Great Canadian Chill — a New Year’s Day polar bear dip at Britannia Beach to help raise money to fight childhood cancer — released a statement on their website and Facebook page last month to confirm both the Ottawa and Toronto events will be cancelled this year because the title sponsor Sears has pulled out.
“While Sears Canada remains committed to the cause of paediatric oncology across the country and continues to fund research and treatment of childhood cancer in hospitals from coast to coast, Sears will not be returning as title sponsor of the event this year. This decision was not made lightly, though their departure from this position impacts our plans for the year ahead.”
They said the cancellation of other “Chill” fund-raising events is not permanent, but will be on hold until they secure another sponsor.
