Once again, Ottawa Fire Services is urging pet owners to keep their dogs leashed around the water after a black Labrador retriever was rescued from the icy Rideau River at Brewer Park Friday.

A fire services spokesperson confirmed bystanders attempted to rescue the dog.

Once fire crews arrived they asked the civilians to retreat from the unsafe shores of the Brewer Park Pond, which run alongside the river, where they were trying to rescue the dog.

“(Fire crews) lured the dog back to shore without any boats on the water,” said fire services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal. “The (dog) is now in the care of his owners.”

While Brewer Park is deemed an off-leash park, the fire department still urges pet owners to keep dogs on a leash around waterways and to call 911 and not try to try to rescue a pet on their own.
