Elgin Street is losing another of its signature spots, with Fresco Bistro Italiano announcing it will be abruptly closing its doors after 25 years.
The restaurant, at 354 Elgin St., along with the adjoining Guest Room cocktail lounge, announced the closure — effective Thursday — on social media Tuesday morning.
“The curtains are closing on this little bistro on Elgin Street and Guest Room cocktails at 10 p.m. on Jan. 5,” according to a Facebook post. “It’s been a pleasure serving this community and city of Ottawa and as much as it pains us to give up this amazing location and all the good times had within these walls… the time has come.”
It was not immediately clear whether the restaurant’s west-end location would remain in business.
Owners Jim and Matt Bickford established the Elgin eatery in 1991.
“We will be honouring all gift certificates and urge you to redeem them while you can,” the restaurant wrote. “It’s been a great ride 613 and thanks for all the support you have shown us.”
The Elgin Street strip has lost several mainstays in the past year, including Maxwell’s, a popular restaurant and bar that closed a year ago, and Boushey’s Fruit Market, a well-known grocery store that closed over the summer.
More to come…
