A member of the Carleton Ravens football squad was banned for two years for a doping violation after prohibited substances were found in a urine sample.

Daniel McNicoll, a fourth-year civil engineering student from Hamilton, is listed on the team’s roster as a defensive back.

According to a statement issued Friday by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, a urine sample collected during in-competition doping control on Oct. 1, 2016 revealed the presence of D- and L-amphetamine.

Oct. 1 was the traditional Panda Game between Carleton and University of Ottawa.

The drugs are classified as a “specified substance” on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List, and according to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program, a first-time violation carries an automatic two-year ban, unless the athlete “can meet the conditions for eliminating or reducing the period of ineligibility.”

According to the CCES, McNicoll waived his right to a hearing and accepted the sanction, which makes him ineligible to participate in any capacity – including training with teammates – with any sport signatory to Canada’s anti-doping program.

The CCES said McNicoll “did not have a proper prescription for the substance… did not acquire the substance from a medical doctor or a pharmacist… (and) knew he was ingesting a Specified Substance, improperly obtained, just days prior to a football competition.”
