A plane carrying 126 Ottawa-bound passengers was sitting on the tarmac of the Fort Lauderdale airport awaiting clearance to depart the scene of a shooting that killed five and wounded eight on Friday.
A WestJet spokeswoman confirmed at 4:30 p.m. that the Boeing 737-700 was waiting to depart Terminal 1. The shooting happened at Terminal 2, which serves Air Canada and Delta Air Lines. The spokeswoman said updates will be issued as soon as possible on the flight’s departure.
For its other operations, WestJet is “waiting to see how the situation unfolds.”
Air Canada, meanwhile, has cancelled a scheduled flight from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which had been scheduled to arrive in Ottawa shortly after 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley tweeted about the incident mid-afternoon Friday.
“For family and friends – we left the Fort Lauderdale airport this morning before the shooting and just arrived home now,” he tweeted, adding that he was “#feelingblessed.”
