That’ll wake you up.

Ottawa got up to a bracing wind chill of -30 Monday morning to face snarled traffic and school buses packed with kids heading back to class after the holiday break.

But that’s still better than what’s expected for Tuesday with a Colorado low expected to sweep the province, bringing up to 10 cm of snow switching to rain Wednesday morning.

By shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, traffic was crawling along the eastbound Hwy. 417 in the west end following a string of collisions. There’s been crashes at Pinecrest and Woodroffe and another at Hwy. 416, while the city’s traffic centre warned that the Champlain Bridge was reduced to one lane in each direction as first responders tackled another crash.

OC Transpo had cancelled a dozen trips although school buses were running on time.

A frostbite advisory was still in place Monday morning with public health officials warning parents to “make sure kids are bundled up.”

Monday is forecast to be mainly cloudy with periods of light snow beginning in the morning and a high of -10C. The overnight low is expected to be -11C.

“There may be a significant impact to travel Tuesday into early Wednesday morning,” Environment Canada warns. “The weather system responsible is a Colorado low that will affect much of the province.”

A forecast 5-10 cm of snow begins in the morning with the high reaching -4C.

Overnight into Wednesday, there’s expected to be snow or rain and a high of -2C.

By Thursday, the mercury is forecast to break zero before we’re back in the deep freeze with a low of -21C by Saturday morning.
