Cue the Jaws music, a great white is coming.

Ottawa awoke to a relatively balmy -7C, compared to Monday’s -25C, and it’s only getting warmer with a forecast high of -3C.

Tuesday morning’s commute was looking good with school buses running, traffic flowing and OC Transpo reporting only a handful of delays – unless you were planning to be aboard one of a string of cancelled flights to Toronto.

But starting sometime Tuesday morning, snow is expected to start falling with an estimated 10 to 15 cm of the white stuff by evening, making the afternoon commute treacherous.

Environment Canada has issued a winter travel advisory, warning that increasing winds of up to 70 km/h may blow the snow around and the snow will turn to rain overnight as temperatures rise to 2C by morning. Freezing rain may fall in late evening towards midnight.

“Poor winter driving conditions are expected today and tonight across the region as a result,” the agency warned, blaming a Colorado low sweeping the province. “Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination or consider changing their travel plans.”

As of last week, Ottawa already had almost triple the snow on the ground of an average year and was homing in on a record.

Wednesday is looking better with a mix of sun and cloud and high of 1C, although there’s a 30 per cent chance of snow.

The mercury will rise to 4C on Thursday with periods of rain to make things messy.

Overnight into Friday, there’s a 60 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers and it’s expected to start getting colder with an overnight low of -8C.

That’s Friday’s expected high, too, and by Saturday morning, we’re back in the deep freeze – the low is forecast to be -24C.
