Wacky winter weather is punishing city roads, with pothole crews filling more than 250,000 craters over the past two months, thousands more than average for the season.

“We definitely have more potholes,” Bryden Denyes, central area roads manager, said Wednesday as temperatures continued to climb above the freezing point.

One week it’s raining, then it’s snowing, followed by biting cold temperatures.

When melting begins, the water gets into the pavement. When the temperature plunges, the water freezes and expands, causing road material to break away, creating potholes.

There have already been some big ones, too.

The city keeps track of how many potholes workers fill.

Between Nov. 15, 2016, and Jan. 10, 2017, workers repaired 254,200 potholes across the city. The three-year average for the same time period is 209,000.

The weather has been unique, even for Ottawa.

Denyes checked out the city’s weather data in recent years. The five-season average between Nov. 15 and Jan. 10 is 21 freeze-thaw cycles. During the same period this season, there were 23.

“It means we’re receiving more service requests for potholes,” Denyes said.

Denyes said the city is using a cold patch asphalt to make repairs in the winter. The material allows water to escape, he said.

“We’re doing our best,” he said. “We are seeing good results.”

Heavy traffic isn’t a bad thing after workers fill a pothole with cold patch asphalt because the vehicles help to compact the material, Denyes said.

Denyes is encouraging people to contact the city to report potholes to help workers identify the areas that need immediate repairs.
