Ontario Provincial Police said Thursday 610 drivers were charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the force’s annual Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) campaign.

Police conducted their blitz between Nov. 21, 2016 and Jan. 7, 2017, setting up more than 7,340 RIDE stops in spots across the province during the campaign. Each stop processed scores of vehicles, checking drivers for signs of impairment.

According to the OPP, six people died due to incidents involving impaired drivers during the holiday season. There were also 270 collisions investigated by the OPP which are believed to have been caused by drivers who were impaired and behind the wheel.

During the campaign, an additional 388 drivers were issued warnings for driving with a blood-alcohol concentration between .05 and .08 – which is nearing the legal limit.
