Rookie Ottawa-Orléans MPP Marie-France Lalonde continued her quick rise in Ontario’s cabinet Thursday, taking over as minister of corrections and community safety in a mini-shuffle at Queen’s Park.
The last minister responsible for policing and provincial jails, David Orazietti, resigned and left politics at the end of last year. Premier Kathleen Wynne promoted Lalonde Thursday morning to succeed him and made a couple of other tweaks to her ministers’ responsibilities.
Tracy MacCharles succeeds Lalonde in the relatively low-profile ministry of government services. Indira Naidoo-Harris becomes the minister responsible for women’s issues (taking those over from MacCharles) and keeps her existing responsibilites for early-childhood education. Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal adds responsibility for small business to his list of duties.
Overall, Wynne’s cabinet has shrunk by one minister, to 29.
