The fun-filled weekends of Winterlude produce many happy memories, and this year’s Winterlude – February 3 to 20, will be even more unforgettable.
“The big thing this year is the 150th anniversary of Confederation,” said Katherine Cyr, a spokesperson for the Department of Canadian Heritage. “That will be at the heart of the Winterlude celebrations, and it will be reflected in a wide variety of activities at our three main sites in Ottawa/Gatineau.”
The Winterlude Kick-Off party is a free event in Confederation Park on February 3. Enjoy live music by Quebec’s talented Karim Ouellet, followed by Ontario-born sensation Coleman Hell for an outdoor dance party.
“When I think of the Winterlude experience, I think of the ice carvers in Crystal Garden who are really great artists,” she said. “Their masterpieces are lit up at night and combined with the Sub-Zero concert series, it makes for a great evening experience. There is also a lot happening during the day and so you can come in the afternoon, go out for dinner and come back and enjoy all the Park has to offer at night.”
The Ice Hog family, Mama, Papa, Noumi and Nouma, are the official mascots of Winterlude.
2017 marks the 30th Crystal Garden International Ice Carving Competition. “This year will also be a special Canada Cup of Ice Carving Edition,” said Cyr. “A first in Canada. There are two other international ice carving competitions in Canada, one in Lake Louise, Ice Magic, and the other in Edmonton, Ice on Whyte Festival. Last year’s winners to all three competitions qualify at this year’s Winterlude. The competition will be fierce and you won’t want to miss it!”
The three official sites for Winterlude festivities are Crystal Garden in Confederation Park, including Marion Dewar Plaza at Ottawa City Hall; The Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau, a kids’ paradise with snow slides and outdoor fun and The Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest skating rink, which winds its way through downtown Ottawa.
“We also have a lot to offer on the Rideau Canal Skateway,” said Cyr. “You can rent skates and try them out or just stand and watch activities like the annual bed race and the new Ice Dragon Boat Race – a first in North America!”
In Confederation Park from February 3 to 20, visitors can examine photographs shared by youth across the country frozen inside the 150 ice sculpture. Explore150 is excited to share snapshots of memories, stories, places of change, defining moments from Canadians coast to coast to coast. The exhibition is presented by Explore150, a project of TakingITGlobal, part of the Canada 150 Signature Project.
Take advantage of the world’s largest skating rink during Winterlude.
They can also learn about the Canada C3 project of Students on Ice Foundation (SOI), an epic 150-day sailing journey from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage in 2017. The Canada C3 exhibit will be presented on weekends and visitors can also view SOI’s beautiful ice sculpture throughout Winterlude. Take a moment to reflect on our Canadian heroes while contemplating the impressive 100-block ice sculpture honouring the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge (starting February 9).
Family-oriented Snowflake Kingdom is another integral part of Winterlude. “A new slide this year brings the total to five,” she said. “There is so much happening there for the little ones. It’s also the home away from home for our mascots, the Ice Hog family, Mama, Papa and Ice Hog children Noumi and Nouma, who travel to Canada’s Capital Region every winter to celebrate Winterlude. “That park offers great winter fun for children and adults alike. I go and I slide and I love it.”
Special this year in the Snowflake Kingdom is a Canada 150 snow labyrinth with a mega-zip line running over it. Back by popular demand is the National Snow Sculpture Rendezvous hosting some of Canada’s greatest snow sculptors representing the five regions of Canada. Discover the park at night where illuminated snow sculptures and slides come to life and Digital Art Projection highlights the coming event MosaiCanada150.
Throughout Winterlude, there are hundreds of activities taking place at the official sites, and activities are also offered at other locations by partners in Canada’s Capital Region, with extra excitement for Canada 150.
