Remember those small lakes and streams that cropped up during Thursday’s thaw?
They’ve become glassy ice surfaces, throwing a little madness into the Friday the 13th commute in the capital.
While police reported no major cashes, there was no shortage of fender-benders and incidents with cars clanging into newly revealed potholes.
The most dramatic incident involved a car that caught fire on Highway 174 in the east end. The incident was cleared up by 7:30 a.m. with no injuries.
Pedestrians, meanwhile were edging their way along sidewalks, trying to avoid patches of black ice and other traps.
The forecast for Friday is mainly sunny with wind gusting up to 40 km/h.
Temperatures are expected to fall to -11 C in the afternoon and to about -21 C, with a windchill of -25.
Saturday is expected to be sunny again, with a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon, a high of -9 C. The wind chill may make it feel like -25 C at times.
Clouds are expected to roll in Sunday, although there is no precipitation yet in the forecast.
