An autopsy on an 83-year-old woman killed Wednesday at her home in Gatineau has been scheduled for Thursday in Montreal.
Gatineau police are now confirming that her death is a homicide, rather than a “suspicious death.”
They still aren’t identifying the victim, but neighbours say she is Thérèse Gauvreau, 83, and she had lived in the white house on the corner of St. Raymond and Cité des Jeunes boulevards for many years.
Police got a phone call early Wednesday afternoon telling them there was an “agitated” man at the victim’s home at 171 Cité-des-Jeunes, which backs onto Gatineau Park.
When officers got there they found the woman’s body inside the house.
The man was arrested at the scene, and is still in custody. He had not yet been charged as of Thursday morning. Neighbours describe him as young-looking, and they don’t believe he is a family member. Police have not released his name or said anything about how he is connected to the case.
Officers were still examining the house and grounds for evidence Thursday.
It is the first homicide in Gatineau since the fall of 2015.
