Even with slick roads and the risk of freezing drizzle, Monday’s commute may be the highlight of a week featuring snow, snow and more snow.

“Winter returns with a significant snowfall on tap beginning tonight and continuing Tuesday,” Environment Canada said in a special weather statement.

A strong and moisture-laden low-pressure area is headed northeast near the Eastern Seaboard of the United States tonight and Tuesday, the agency said. The storm track is close enough to Eastern Ontario to mean plenty of snow Monday night and Tuesday.

Snow, possibly heavy at times, and possibly mixed with ice pellets is forecast to start Monday night and continue through Tuesday.

“Snow and ice pellet amounts up to 15 cm are expected by the time it winds down Tuesday night,” Environment Canada said, adding that snowfall warnings may be on the way and that travellers should be ready for accumulating snow and low visibility and “adjust their travel plans accordingly.”

On Wednesday, expect a 40 per cent chance of flurries during the day and 70 per cent chance of snow overnight. There’s a 60 per cent chance of snow Thursday and a risk of flurries Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, mild temperatures early in the week are expected to return to seasonal form with the low dipping to -12C by Saturday night.
