Five people were killed after gunmen opened fire in a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers, the mosque's president told reporters on Sunday.

Earlier, a witness told Reuters that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center.

Quebec City Police are outside of a mosque where multiple gunshots were fired.
Multiple people are feared wounded, according to CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada. Their condition is not known at this time.
A number of ambulances are parked outside of the Islamic cultural centre of Quebec in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood.
Police have set up a perimeter around the mosque.

Five dead in shooting at mosque in Quebec City: reports

Multiple gunmen opened fire in a Quebec mosque during evening prayers, killing five people, according to Reuters.

Police in Quebec City say shots have been fired at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec on Sainte-Foy St.

“Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” the mosque’s president, Mohamed Yangui, told Reuters.

Witnesses say many people were wounded and some reports state two of three suspected gunmen have been arrested.

A live video feed on the mosque’s Facebook page showed images of multiple police vehicles and yellow police tape.

Last June, worshippers at the same mosque discovered the severed head of a pig left in front of one of the doors, wrapped in cellophane with bows and ribbon, and a card that said “bonne appétit.”
