Riddle me this, Ottawa. What do you get when you combine a snow plow and a garbage truck?

Answer: We’re not sure, but you will soon see an example of one rolling on Ottawa streets, graciously on loan from the City of New York.

We are always looking for new, innovative and cost-effective ideas to keep Ottawa’s streets clear throughout the winter. The idea of attaching snow plows to garbage trucks, or waste collection vehicles, is one such idea.

As it turns out, the City of New York already has vehicles that can serve both purposes. So, an agreement was made between the City of Ottawa and the City of New York to borrow one of those special combined vehicles for use on our roads this winter. It won’t be used for collecting waste; only for clearing snow, and only in residential areas.

It should also be noted that, in case you haven’t noticed, Ottawa is very different from New York City. Our winters, streets, snow plows, waste collection vehicles, maintenance and collection schedules and labour contracts all differ. This is only a pilot project, so, don’t expect to see a whole fleet of these vehicles in Ottawa this winter.

But, you might see one. And now you know why.
