The summer puppet festival held in Almonte for a dozen years has been cancelled, probably for good.

The Puppets Up! organizers posted a notice on their website saying the festival has faced a steady decrease in revenue from attendance, grants and sponsorships. “We are unwilling to proceed in the face of a certain deficit,” said the statement.

The festival scheduled for Aug. 11 to 13, 2017 has been cancelled, and “in all likelihood” will not continue in subsequent years, the message said.

The festival ended last year in a deficit.

The celebration of puppetry attracted thousands of visitors to the town west of Ottawa each year.

“An entire generation of young people have grown up in this community with a knowledge of the art of puppet-building, and an appreciation for theatre and puppetry as an art form,” said the statement. “That is a gift that we hope will endure.”

The statement suggested the festival would be back “in another form.”

“Puppets Up will be taking some time to think and refocus our efforts so that we can continue to participate in the community, and to spread the love of the art of puppetry in some new ways.”
