Outaouais commuters were back to using whatever Plan B they have devised in the last month Thursday, as unionized drivers and mechanics staged their third day-long rotating strike in as many weeks.
Meanwhile, the Société du transport de l’Outaouais announced early in the day it will file what it called a “best and last” offer for an arbitrated settlement in its dispute with the union.
The company and the union were to meet this morning, the company said, and the STO said aid it would not comment on the offer before the union had seen it.
The announcement came after the STO and the union had worked out a deal Wednesday afternoon to limit picketing at company installations.
The company had gone to court seeking an injunction, claiming pickets had harassed non-unionized workers reporting for duty at the two previous walkouts.
While no injunction was issued, the two sides were able to work out a deal under which picketers would be limited at company sites and at a distance from entrances.
Traffic was already in a snarl at the usual busy spots across the region Thursday morning, although there were no major blockages reported.
At Les Terrasses de la Chaudiere, a few Ottawa-bound passengers waiting for OC Transpo buses seem to have lost patience.
Colleagues Stéphanie Podrez and Estelle Lagace, live in Aylmer but carpooled to Hull to catch a bus to their federal government workplace near Parliament Hill.
“To me, it is an essential service,” Lagace said. “In Montreal, in Quebec, it is an essential service. It’s not fair for the client. We pay for it, we need it. We need it to go to work.”
“We have a good Plan B,” Podrez said, who called their situation “aggravating” but worries about low-wage people without access to a vehicle or any other option.
Members of Syndicat uni de transport Local 591 voted to strike on Jan. 20, staging the first transit shutdown Mar. 16 while informing STO management the one-day actions would continue on a weekly basis.
STO said the union would notify management 24 hours in advance of a strike.
Union members have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2014.
Paratransit is not affected by the strike.
