It’s the kind of call that demands a trained professional, schooled in high-altitude work, ready to take risks.

Tommy the cat was up a tree near his home at Island Park Drive and Premier Avenue on Friday afternoon. He’d been chased by a neighbourhood dog and had refused to come down for 30 minutes.

Naturally, the owner called Ottawa Fire Services and mentioned that neighbours were offering to help.

That set off further alarm bells for the OFS, as the news release mentions politely: “There was a concern from Ottawa Fire Services personnel that someone may be injured when using ladders to retrieve a distressed animal.”

“There’s a danger that we’d need an ambulance, in addition to all the fire equipment and ladders,” noted on OFS official.

“If we can go, we love to do it.”

The nearby station was good to go and rolled up with the right gear.

Firefighter Stephen Fleck took point and was up the ladder to grab Tommy from his perch, coming down with Tommy’s claws firmly lodged in the firefighter’s protective suit.

It’s all a bit of a cliché but the fire service says it enjoys the contact while trying to “ensure pet owners aren’t injured if they attempt to rescue their animal.”
