A family of five from Richmond is homeless after their Fowler Street home was engulfed in a two-alarm fire Friday afternoon.

The resident called 911 just after 3 p.m. to report thick smoke coming from the basement of the house at 27 Fowler. But by the time firefighters arrived a few minutes later, smoke was jetting from the back door and there were flames visible.

All the residents got out safely, but several firefighters were in the house when the main floor collapsed near the front door at 3:24 p.m. There were no injuries and all the firefighters were able to get out safely, but a second alarm was called in at around 4 p.m. after the fire had spread rapidly throughout the house. It was finally brought under control at about 5:15 p.m.

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army assisted the two adults and three children who were displaced, while fire investigators continued to probe the cause of the fire and assess the damage.
