Last year’s Ottawa 10K was novice runner Nina Ryan’s first 10K race.

It was such a wonderful experience she has signed up again this year, with lots of family support. Son Logan, 7, is training for the Scotiabank Ottawa Kids Marathon, and Nina’s husband, Paul, now has the running bug as well. “He and our son Jake, 6, will be watching the races this year,” but will be running in future, she said.

“Running with family is a great way to share common interests, and work together as a team,” said Nina, 35. “It’s an amazing way to connect with your family. The kids watch you and then get interested. Everything Logan did was his own initiative, which got me to sign him up for races.

“Logan has had to track all his activities for the Kids Marathon, and the kids love technology. He goes to Grasshopper Hill Kids Run Club in Alta Vista once a week. It’s perfect for getting ready for Race Weekend.”

Because she never cared for running when she was in school, “it was a big surprise to me that I liked it,” said Nina, who started running in July 2015, and keeps a running blog. “After having kids, it was something I could do on my own, a nice way for me to get out, connect with other runners and keep challenging myself. It made me feel tough and strong; it was a great feeling.”

The event’s race director agrees.

“As people make these commitments, they often surprise themselves with their achievement,” said John Halvorsen, race director of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, who in 1988 set the course record at the Ottawa 10K, a record that stood for 20 years.

“I see it at the finish line; I see the emotion in them,” said Halvorsen, who appreciates all levels of runners. “Sometimes there is the same reaction from those running the 2K or the 5K as in the marathon,” he said. “The challenge may be psychological or mental, or a fear of ‘I don’t want to be last.’ It’s about their sense of overcoming. People’s goals can be fitness-related or just overcoming the fear of going out there. A race with as many participants as the Ottawa 2K or HTG Sports 5K can less intimidating than a smaller one; it’s like being in a school of fish.”

Race organizers are prepared for all kinds of weather, he said, and last year was a good test of hot conditions. “We are making improvements to the 5K race to add more water for runners to drink, as well as to hose people down if it’s a hot day.”

To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend has created red shirts with Ottawa and Canada’s landscapes for the different distances. “We try to make our shirts a little different, with the most elaborate design going to the full marathon. It’s all about getting a bit of swag, the timing and the food. It’s a unique race in Ottawa and the whole country,” said Halvorsen.

In 2016, more than 47,000 people participated in six events over the weekend, including the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon, while 2,500 volunteers helped bring the event to life.

Another big part of the fun is the two-and-a-half-day Health and Fitness Expo that attracts exhibitors from all over North America. Located at the Shaw Centre, 55 Colonel By Dr., the expo is Canada’s largest, featuring over 100 retailers and attracting over 80,000 people each year. The expo is free to enter and open to the public. Also the site of race kit pickup, expo hours are Thursday, May 25, 4 p.m.-8 p.m.; Friday, May 26, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, May 27, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

This year’s Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend takes place May 27-28. Saturday’s events include the Ottawa 2K at 3 p.m., the HTG Sports Ottawa 5K at 4 p.m. and the Ottawa 10K at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s events include the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon at 7 a.m., the Scotiabank Ottawa Kids Marathon at 8 a.m. and the Scotiabank Ottawa Half Marathon at 9 a.m.

There’s still time to register yourself and your family for any of the distances at Canada’s largest running weekend. You can run one of the shorter distances and still be a big part of this spectacular event, embraced by all of Ottawa, in Canada’s 150th year.

“Just being there will be incredibly exciting,” said Nina. “We’re going to go there and have a good time and feed off everyone’s enthusiasm!”
