They smelled a rat. Quite a few, in fact.

Firefighters have temporarily moved out of Station 37 in Riverside South after the discovery of as many as 30 rats, which exterminators believe have gotten into the walls.

Firefighters hoped to be back in the station on Earl Armstrong Road by Sunday night or Monday morning, Ottawa Fire Services Deputy Chief Kim Ayotte said.

Firefighters had seen a few rats outside the station before but on Saturday spotted a large number of rodents and could smell them.

Exterminators are now tackling the infestation and say it will be easier to round up the rodents without people around, Ayotte said.

Ayotte said it’s a health and safety issue for firefighters to work in an infested building. A review showed that moving crews to stations in Leitrim and Barrhaven for a short time will have only a “very minimal public safety effect.”

Crews are routinely redeployed to other stations during renovations or training exercises, for example.
