Two years after 30 students and staff at Charles H. Hulse Public School became ill after contact with pesticides, the company that did the spraying has been charged.

The company, Rentokil, sprayed the school on April 11, 2015 to control cockroaches. Afterward, students and staff complained of headaches, nausea and itchy eyes.

The school was closed for two days as a result and staff and students relocated to Parkwood Hills Public School. Charles H. Hulse underwent renovations, including replacing drywall and carpet to ensure the school would be safe from further contamination to the insecticide.

Rentokil had sprayed the school using Gardex and Konk 400 residual insecticide. The pest company was required to inform the school before using the product but proceeded without permission. Both of the treatments contained Propoxur which was banned in the U.S. in 2007 and it remains under scrutiny in Canada today.

The province charged Rentokil for improper treatment. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board terminated its contract with Rentokil in June 2015 following the incident.

The school board has now opted into using other forms of pest control such as gels and dusts to remove any remaining pests.
