'Several left-wing activist groups have filed accusations against me,' says Devin Nunes
The chairman of the U.S. House intelligence committee says he will temporarily step aside from the panel's probe into Russian meddling in the election.
In a statement issued Thursday, Republican Congressman Devin Nunes of California says the decision came after "several left-wing activist groups have filed accusations against me with the Office of Congressional Ethics."
He called those accusations "entirely false and politically motivated."
He says he will continue fulfilling other duties with the committee and wants to talk to the ethics committee as soon as possible to defend himself.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement he will "fully support" Nunes's decision.
"He continues to have my trust, and I know he is eager to demonstrate to the Ethics Committee that he has followed all proper guidelines and laws," the statement says.
