For people living along the Rideau River, it’s a rite of spring as sure as the first robin and the first crocus.

The river overflowed its banks in Ottawa Thursday, with water cresting along the low-lying neighbourhoods near Windsor Park in Old Ottawa South and Brantwood Park, just downstream. Thursday’s heavy rainfall, along with snowmelt and already saturated, still-frozen ground contributed to the flooding.

Peak flows along the Rideau are expected late Friday or early Saturday, with water levels beginning to fall by early next week, according to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. The authority urged people to be cautious around the floodwater, especially since there is still ice that can make walking treacherous.
