There has been one arrest following a string of seven separate swarmings in a three-hour period in the Byward Market Thursday night, in which at least nine people were robbed.

Ottawa police say the victims were all approached by two or three people at a time. One of the attackers pulled out a knife and the group demanded valuables, though in several cases they didn’t get anything.

No one was hurt. The attacks came between 8:45 and 11:50 p.m.

Police say the attacks took place in different locations, but all were close together in the Market area.

Police eventually made an arrest on Rideau Street near Sussex Drive. They have charged Khalil Halouane, 19, of Ottawa with nine counts of robbery, seven counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of an offence, and a string of others charges related to weapons, assault and making threats.

Two suspects remain at large and the investigation continues. Police hope to share security camera photos eventually.

Anyone else who was a victim of the attacks Thursday night is encouraged to call police. The robbery unit is also looking for anyone with information about the attackers, at (613) 236-1222, extension 5116.
