The Superdome at Ben Franklin Park in Nepean has been closed after it “deflated unexpectedly” on Monday afternoon.

Patrons inside the inflated indoor arena on Knoxdale Road near the corner of Greenbank Road and Hunt Club Road escaped without injury, according to a message from the management of the inflated indoor arena.

The climate-controlled superdome is used for athletic practice and events ranging from soccer games to a driving range. The space in the superdome is t94 metres by 56 metres, the same size as a regulation FIFA soccer field, and can be divided into three smaller fields used for ultimate frisbee, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, football and other sports.

No one was available at the facility to explain why it deflated. However, the superdome’s staff are hoping the venue will be open again on Friday. Those with bookings are asked to call 613-829-3663 and staff working with the city of Ottawa to find fields for users in other venues.

The dome was built under an agreement between the city and Thunderbird Sports Management Inc. to meet the demand for indoor space for sports. Ottawa’s share of the project was about $2 million, with most of the money going toward site preparation and infrastructure services such as concrete footings for the dome and the parking lot. When the superdome was inflated for the first time in 2008, the process took 90 minutes using a pressurized air system.
