Gas prices in Ottawa jumped as high as $1.20 per litre on Wednesday, as motorists prepared for road trips over the long Easter weekend to visit family and friends.

According to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, there could be 14 per cent more cars travelling along Highway 401 through Gananoque this weekend, compared to average weekend traffic volumes.

Over Easter weekend in 2016, the ministry said the average daily traffic travelling along Highway 401 through the area topped out at 33,893 vehicles. An average, non-Easter weekend saw around 29,755 cars daily.

The expected increase in traffic is pushing up demand for gas at the same time a host of other factors are coming into play. New carbon taxes instituted by the Ontario government, a weak Canadian dollar and the rising price of crude are all affecting pump prices. Added to that is the switch from winter gas to summer gas blends, which are more expensive to make at refineries.

The average price of a litre of gasoline in Ottawa sat around $1.18 pre litre on Wednesday afternoon, according to Gasbuddy.com, up more than five cents from where it was one day earlier. Gasbuddy uses an application on smartphones to collect gas price data from users and share it with others online. Many stations in the city’s high-traffic areas were already selling gas for more than $1.20 per litre Wednesday afternoon. One, near the intersection of Prince of Wales Drive and Fisher Avenue, was selling gas for $1.22 per litre.

Some analysts are predicting the price of gas to hit $1.30 per litre by summer.
