In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
For many years, Ottawa football fans clung to the memory of The Catch, the 24-yard touchdown reception by Tony Gabriel that gave the Rough Riders a 23-20 win over the other Roughriders, the ones from Saskatchewan, in 1976. With time running out, QB Tom Clements ignored a run play call sent in from the sidelines and, instead, called for “Rob-I-Fake-34-Tight-End-Flag.” Gabriel started running toward the goalpost, planted his foot and cut right. Gabriel made The Catch and spiked the ball backwards over his head. Game over, Grey Cup … something fans would wait 40 years to see again.
